Raw shot counts explain little without the game state

Form guides are among the most popular statistics in football. A row of letters showing the last five results appears next to almost every fixture. Simple to scan, they invite stronger conclusions than they support.

What recent form tells you

A five-match sample tells you about a short period. It does not say who the opponents were, where the matches were played or what the line-ups looked like. Five wins against low-ranked sides are not the same as five wins against the top of the league.

A better approach is to compare form with underlying measures. If a team has won four of five but was outshot in most matches and created low-quality chances, the form may not last. If it has lost three but created plenty, the table may understate its level. These are readings, not forecasts.

For a view that shows the last matches with scores and venues, the Spinando Casino platform can serve as an example. Home and away labels turn a bare sequence of letters into something more useful.

Regression to the mean is a helpful idea. Extreme runs tend to move closer to the long-term average over time, simply because extremes are rare. A team in a very strong or very weak spell is more likely to drift back toward the middle than to continue indefinitely.

Context in the schedule also matters. A run of home matches, a spell of European fixtures or a block of matches against the bottom four can produce misleading form. Listing opponents beside the results takes seconds and makes the story clearer.

One more illustration. A team unbeaten in five is visiting a team that has lost four of five. The form guide suggests an easy match for the visitors, but the home side’s losses came against the top four and it has the better expected-goals record. Whichever way the match goes, the form guide would have been an incomplete summary. Looking past the letters is the point. Form is an account of the past, not a rule, and it deserves a gentle reading.

If betting markets form part of how you follow the season, a budget and a time limit decided in advance are the best protection against reading a streak too literally.

Form is a useful description of the recent past. It is a limited guide to the next match, and honest analysts say so.
